The summer street fair season is just around the corner!

The San Francisco Dept. of Public Health – STD Prevention and Control
Section is once again forming its local volunteer team to help conduct
outreach and recruit people for STD screening at the summer street fairs
(Dore Alley, Folsom Street Fair, Castro Street Fair).

To be a part of the team you will need to attend a brief sexual health
training and be willing to talk about sex, health and STD screening.

I know that this post doesn't involve the Powerhouse, EXCEPT that I've talked about Gay Geeks a lot and many of the people I've talked with have said, "Please let me know when you have your next event." I haven't cleared this with management (hell, I'd have to be there before 11am on a weekday!) but what the heck. They have good food (try the Chicken Salpicon sandwich!) and a good atmosphere. Heck, there are even books for sale in the back room. How much more nerdy can you get?

Gay Geeks is a haven for intellectuals and visionaries. Thus, your learned geekery is most welcome. If you study languages, streetcars, oceans, Islam, or have a collection of Elvis postcards, or you're running for mayor of SF, you're our kind of people. Come on by. This sets the Original Gay Geeks apart from other such groups. The group doesn’t focus on computers, and it doesn’t focus on gay issues. In fact, we’ve usually gone through hours of discussions and not mentioned computers or gay folks even once.

"Dear Friends of SOMA Gay Culture,

Hole In The Wall Saloon has become famous since it opened some thirteen years ago. At the depth of the AIDS epidemic, when gay South of Market seemed to be dying, "The Hole" became a joyous retreat for our community with an accent on art, fun, and music. A thinking man's bar.

Anyway, the building where it lives now is rapidly falling apart. For years we've been looking for a more secure location, and in October of 2006 we bought a suitable property on Folsom Street.

Shortly thereafter, a man named Jim Meko handed us a letter. Allegedly, he had already delivered a copy to the seller's realtor before we bought the property. We'd never seen this letter. It stated that he and the neighborhood did not want another bar in the South of Market area (despite the fact that we had already been here for twelve and a half years). So we held a neighborhood meeting and presented our plans. We assured everyone that we would address all concerns with haste and sincerity. Still, Mr. Jim Meko countered that if he stood at the intersection of 8th and Folsom streets, he could hear loud music from inside Hole In The Wall on any given night. He stated that The Eagle Tavern, our second establishment (which has been a gay bar for more than twenty-five years now) was a terrible nuisance and that he was constantly annoyed by the commotion from its Sunday community benefits. He finally stood up and exclaimed the following to our new neighbors:

"Don't trust these guys! They're bad bar owners!"

This last accusation cut the deepest. We've tried hard over the years to be a positive force in our small corner of the world. We clean and police the streets in front of our establishments. We donate time, money, and energy to charities and clubs that we see making a difference. Most importantly, we respect our employees as human beings with rights. Since the beginning, we've provided them with health insurance, paid vacations, and a yearly retreat at The Russian River. Despite Mr. Jim Meko's characterization of it as a nuisance, The Eagle Tavern raises tens of thousands of dollars for charities and civic organizations each year. Finally, we can't count how many gay men have sworn they met their life partner at the Hole In The Wall Saloon and consider it a sacred place. We're proud of these things and believe ourselves to be far from "bad bar owners".

We were soon informed that a hearing was being insisted upon by a second neighbor at the urging of Mr. Jim Meko and that others had now been persuaded to oppose the bar's relocation project. We personally called this second neighbor. He had never been to Hole In The Wall. He had been to The Eagle Tavern once.

At this point, the future of the Hole In The Wall looks grim. The floor and foundation are in bad shape. The bar's days are numbered. We can't afford to purchase another building; and in any case something similar to all of this would be the certain outcome. South of Market, in the hands of the small-minded, has slowly turned petty and intolerant. Not only is Hole In The Wall certain to close if we can't re-locate, but the future of The Eagle is in doubt as well. Mr. Jim Meko's main complaints were directed against it, and he sits on the city's Entertainment Commission.

What we're asking for is your spiritual and verbal support. We need testimony from people who know the Hole In The Wall and The Eagle Tavern and consider them important. A short letter sent directly to

would be wonderful. Your presence and willingness to speak for a minute or two at our hearing on Thursday, May 10th beginning at 1:30 would be of immense help. It will be at City Hall, Room 400. In any event, the destiny of both the Hole In The Wall and The Eagle Tavern are up to their fans now… As is the future and spirit of all of South of Market.

iPod Night?

Anybody want to convince Ray to do iPod night on Tuesdays? He's wanted to do it, but I think i messed it up when I brought in my MP3 player and it just happened to randomly pick out 3 of the slowest doo wop songs of the 50s. Ryan was not amused. I'm sure there are lots of people out there who have interesting stuff on their music players who could help make this night a hit.

PS: The Sansa player from Sandisk costs less than half the price of an iPod for the same memory, and plays Windows Media files as well as MP3s. So, you don't have to be a slave to your Apple Store or anything....

Have just re-located to Bay Area (Polk & Post) this is my 3rd and hopefuly last residency here. Originally from the Snow capped Mountains of Utah ... (Brrrr). Many co-factors exist for this move but as the song implies, "My heart has always been in San Francisco" Ive left it twice but never again. I miss the diversity the most. Too long have I undured with those who live beyond the statistical Bell Curve. Happy to be back.

Have been diagnosed with DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and subsequently PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease). Presently take Coumadin - an anti-coagulant. Corrective Surgery has been scheduled at St. Mary's for 3/14. Acquired a Support Tag for my dog, "BABE" who has been trained to pull me up and down these hills in the City.

Am devout Radical Faerie, founder of Utah R.F. and still owner of Tattoo Parlor in Salt Lake City. Am LQQking for work in diferent feild. Have no trade nor expertise outside of Tattooing and the Arts. CCSF Alumni 2001 - Associates of Arts - Creative & Visual Arts - Any help would be appreciated.

That Store upstairs!

It seems that many of the local miss the boutique i so very proudly work at, AranciatAmara on Castro, on the same side of 18th as Harvey's. It's between All Seasons and Citizen. So many Castro residents will pop in and say "I've lived here for 7 years and have always wondered whats up these stairs." Its like some mystery.

Mystery solved. It's a ittalian boutique comprised of Designers and labels really popular in Europe, most specifically Italy. Menswear and really inventive. There's also paintings that are worthy of a glance that are also sold. Very elegant and laid back.

Jose, the Dregs of the Bust and I will be hosting "Jolly Ho" at the Powerhouse that night. We have a pirate theme and fun begins at 9 p.m and concludes around midnight. Just in case anyone was interested, Jose is back once in a while at the Powerhouse bar-backing. He is filling in for the regular guys when they need a day off. Jose next works Monday night Aug. 14 and Tues. night Aug. 15.

Pre Dore Alley Fair Party at the Powerhouse

Hey everyone. Please join me as I host the Pre Dore Party Thursday night July 27. We will have some porn stars from Raging Stallion, cute go-go boys, great music, a boot black, great raffle prizes, and this will be a fundraiser for Stop AIDS. This is the 5th year I have been involved with this party.

We will end the night with the Mr. Dore Alley 2006 contest which is a fun, leathery contest open to all men who have not been in porn or have a leather title. In other words regular guys are encouraged to enter this "beauty contest". Thursday night be one of the more fun parties of the weekend. Hope you can make it.

Last Monday I think it was, I went back to the Powerhouse. I was on my way back from another adventure and was about to pass the place, so I thought I'd stop by. I hadn't been there in many weeks. I'm not sure why I went, but I think it was because I'm always hopeful that I've either misinterpreted something and things are really better than they are, or that if they were bad, they'll get better.

It felt good to go back.

Here's the scoop:

"Sorry for the mass posting everybody, but it's a great cause and i wanted to get the word out to those who might be interested.
This guy put his ass on the line to protect other people and he ended up with a $4000 bail bill.
Every little bit helps and it should be a fun evening.

“On December 10th the doorman of the Powerhouse was unjustly arrested while
detaining a man who had randomly attacked two different people near the bar a week before.

All charges against the doorman were dropped within days, but he still has a $4000 debt from posting bail the night of his arrest.
Since he was detained at the start of the weekend he would have spent four days in jail waiting for his case to be heard if he hadn't posted bail. This benefit is to help him get that money back.

Thanks to the doorman's efforts, a photograph of the attacker was taken, he was identified by the victims and was arrested, found guilty and jailed a few weeks later."

Social Notes

It looks like the Stench party PAWS benefit the other night was a success. Also, Gehno, the DJ for that night, passed around some mementos of the occasion, a CD of tracks he mixed for the occasion, Stench Vol I.

It seems that the foreign travelers are beginning to hit the Powerhouse again, something which used to be a regular thing, but hadn't happened in several years. It's nice to see a variety of people again.

Last night (Sunday) the Powerhouse rocked! Where'd all these people come from? The vibe was good, the music was 80s, a good time was had by all. Interesting in that the place didn't have the heavy cruising vibe it has on Friday and Saturday. It had a playful vibe. I'm not sure where the stars and moon are positioned, but I hope they stick around. We need more nights like this!

Powerhouse Tribe Night A Success!

The first crossover venture between this tribe and the Powerhouse came off without a hitch and brought lots of people together.

Jose did a great job organizing things and bringing in a go go boy to dance for us. Lots of people met each other.

I wandered around giving comps to the friendly people. (I don't care what you look like or how you dress, but if you smiled and said hello I gave you a free drink comp.)

Jose and I are on similar tracks here: we'd like to encourage people to meet and greet each other, create a different kind of environment from a lot of what's going on. Last night was a good start. (Heck, I talked with various people about old cartoons, body building, cars, Burning Man, and bicycling.)

I expect that this Powerhouse Tribe night will continue in the future. Keep watching this space!

Powerhouse Tribe Night

Jose suggested having a Powerhouse Tribe Night for this Tribe and I think that's great idea. Maybe a Tuesday night in the future say from 9 p.m. till 11 p.m. or so. I think I can talk the Powerhouse to have drinks specials for the Tribe. Michael Vega would be the early bartender and cute Ray would take over at 10 p.m. for us. Tell me what you think and I talk to Scott the Powerhouse manager if the Tribe is up to it.

What's With All The People?

Last night (Tuesday) at the Powerhouse was the busiest Tuesday I've ever seen! It looked like a weekend night.

A couple drunk guys told me that it was the overflow crowd from all the people who didn't get in to see Charo judging a drag contest at the Stud. But no, there weren't any glamorous-looking people at the Powerhouse and nobody in drag. It was something else.

It was like a great tour bus unloaded and brought a bunch of handsome guys I've never seen before. It was like I was transported to another dimension.

Anybody know what happened? I asked a couple other guys who were as amazed as I was. I don't know if it's a trend or not, since Monday night was fairly dead.

It was nice to see Jose again at the Powerhouse. I don't think I've seen him since he left the barback job and went on to other things. He's now promoting an event at the Stud on Saturday nights.

Tonight (Sunday) was an unusually good night for the Powerhouse. The vibes felt right, the people seemed friendly. All in all it was a good evening.

Thought I'd mention that the Powerhouse is the only gay bar I visit anymore. I like the DJs, some of the bartenders (especially Ray, one of the friendliest people I've ever met), and the ambience is perfect for that late wanderlust that causes me to go out of my way to visit.
